Are patrons able to reproduce cartographic materials in the reading room?

Patrons may use self-service scanners and photocopiers in the reading room to digitize maps and atlases that are not at risk of being damaged. All materials must be approved by reading room staff prior to scanning. Manuscript materials and items from the division's rarity collection may not be reproduced on self-service scanners or photocopiers. Patrons may also photograph maps and atlases with a digital camera, using only ambient light and pending staff approval. Patrons must make their own assessment of copyrights in light of their intended use of the images, whereas staff are prohibited by law from assisting patrons in scanning or otherwise reproducing copyrighted materials.
