Can I study at the Library of Congress?
Yes! You are welcome to study in our reading rooms designated for General Collections any time during our service hours. Reading rooms are open to anyone (age 16* and older) who has obtained a library card.
We do our best to maintain a quiet study environment, however the volume of noise can vary throughout the day due to events, tours, and general day-to-day operations.
Group study or meeting rooms are not available.
Reading Rooms Open for Studying:
Jefferson Building
- Main Reading Room, LJ110
- Microform & Electronic Resource Center (MERC), LJ139 - computer lab
Adams Building
Madison Building
Hours:
- Monday - Thursday: 8:30am - 8:30pm
- Friday & Saturday: 8:30am - 5:00pm
- Sunday & Federal Holidays: CLOSED
Other reading rooms are open for research but may require an appointment and have different service hours. Check our research centers webpage to see a list of reading rooms, their hours, and review access requirements on each rooms webpage.
Get your Library Card:
Pre-register for your library card online and you must complete the process in-person with a valid photo ID at one of the Reader Registration station.
*Researchers age 16 and 17 must bring a completed permission form signed by a legal parent or guardian.
