What can I bring into the reading room?

You are welcome to bring personal items such as laptops, computer tablets, notebooks, pens, and pencils into our reading rooms and research centers. Cloak rooms and lockers are provided to safely store other personal belongings during your visit.

Personal items to leave in the cloak room or at home:

  • Bags and containers larger than 9.5 inches by 6.25 inches, including large purses, laptop cases, backpacks, tote bags, briefcases, clear & net bags, shopping bags, and luggage.
  • Musical instruments and their cases.
  • Food, drinks (including water bottles), and food or drink containers.
  • Computer & television monitors, and radios.
  • Newspapers.
  • Outerwear including raincoats, winter coats, trench coats, and overcoats.
  • Pets – Note: exception for service animals; guide, alert, and other services to persons with disability or medical condition.
  • Scanners and copiers larger than hand-held.
  • Scissors or other cutting implements.
  • Umbrellas

Some reading rooms and research centers may have additional restrictions regarding personal items. Be sure to check with staff or visit the website of the space you are planning to visit before you arrive.
