The Library's collections include over 178 million items in 470 languages and virtually every format—not just books and journals, but also manuscripts, maps, microforms, newspapers, photographs, prints, drawings, sheet music, sound and audio recordings, and other formats.
While virtually all subject areas are represented in the collections, the Library does not collect comprehensively in the areas of clinical medicine and technical agriculture, which are the collection responsibilities of the National Agricultural Library and the National Library of Medicine, respectively. The Library of Congress is also distinct from the National Archives, which is the major repository for the official records of the United States government.
The Library's reading rooms are the primary gateways to the collection materials. To learn more about the materials, it is best to visit each reading room's "About this Reading Room" page, which explains the scope of the collections in greater detail. All of our reading room web pages are linked here.
